      Phillip Blanchard is an editor on the Washington Post financial copy desk. From 1989 through 2000, he was an editor at the Chicago Sun-Times. Previously he worked at the Times Union of Albany, N.Y., and the Schenectady (N.Y.) Gazette.
      Catherine E. "Cathy" Ruhl is a certified nurse midwife at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., and its affiliated clinic, Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care. She is former director of the Nurse Midwifery Service at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. Previously she worked as a midwife at the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital and Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas and the University of Illinois at Chicago.
     Benjamin R. "Ben" Blanchard was born on June 15, 1997. He is a student at Wyngate Elementary School in Bethesda, Md.
     Phil, Cathy and Ben live in Bethesda, Md., just outside Washington.
