Profits and stock prices always "take off" and "soar," or, in bad times, "hit turbulence." When I was working at the Anchorage Daily News, an unwritten rule was that any story on a telecom that made money had to have a headline saying "rings up profit." (This was in the late '90s, when telecoms still made money.) It was enough to make you want to puke.
