BY MARK BROWN SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST
I had a real job once. Or should I say I once had a job where I did real work--wore a hard hat and got real dirty and everything.
The job had its good points, but overall I didn't like it much.
The best part of the job was that it convinced me to stay in college and become a newspaper writer.
Writing for a newspaper probably qualifies as a real job, although I occasionally need to remind myself that it doesn't qualify as real work.
This reminder is especially important on the weeks I return from vacation, when I'd rather not, such as this one.<p>***Tell you what, Mark. Stay out a few more days, till you're ready to write something worth running.***

According to my Oxford:
"real" - actually existing as a thing or occurring in fact, objective, genuine, rightly so called, natural, sincerely, not merely apparent or nominal or supposed or pretended or artificial or hypcritical or affected...
"job" - piece of work, esp. one done for hire or profit...paid position of employment....
I certainly have met my share of artificial, hypocritical and affected PEOPLE in the writing business, but the job is real enough.
