Whatever happened to the word "lit"? As in past tense of "to light"? When did that change to "lighted"? And why did it do that?

Oh, well, consider it another example of the English language's much-discussed "evolution."

This term still survives in marijuana usage. ("Unbeknownst to me, my fiance's brothers lit up at our housewarming party.")

"Lit" is not AP style. That doesn't mean it's no longer part of the language. It's used all the time.

Never forget that AP style and reality are occasionally two polarized opposites.

Sometimes I think *all* stylebooks and reality are polarized opposites! ;) <p>It's odd how these things change over time for no apparent (let alone good!) reason. Lit, dove, proven come to mind as examples of those that I was taught many moons ago but are no longer considered preferred usage. I hate NW. But that's another topic.

Don't forget: "I accidentally lit my English Lit textbook on fire when I lit up."
