 Post subject: "cooler" temperatures: ugh!

OK, kids, reassure me: Am I the only living editor who still thinks temperatures can rise or fall, but cannot get hot or cold? <p>This was one of those bedrock nitpicks pounded into my head in school but apparently it's not as widespread as other bedrock nitpicks.

That fact was a recent issue at my own newsroom recently.<p>I don't blame reporters or even editors for getting this wrong; the terminology is so much a part of the vernacular, it's easy to miss.<p>I presume this is one issue in which most are not willing to surrender to "language evolution." :D

When it's one of my pet peeves, it's a statement of determined defense of the language. If it's somebody else's pet peeve but doesn't trouble me, then it's time we let the langauge evolve according to current usage.
