Our Fearless leader mentioned the nonsense movement in another post.
So, in our neverending struggle against nonsense, perhaps we can aggregate all grevious examples here.

Any such list, of course, has to begin with the infamous "Maestro Concept," whose authors so misunderstand the purpose of copy editing that one might think they are academics, not journalists: http://www2.truman.edu/~chappell/comm442/1215lecture.htm

I free-lance for a publication that uses the maestro concept on their main features. It seems to work for them. Probably not needed at the Washington Post, or most places. I don't cotton to it in general. I don't need a photographer to help me write a headline, and a shooter doesn't need me to tell her how to illustrate a story. One positive thing to take from the maestro theory is its emphasis on thinking like a reader. A copy editor can go a long way and find much success simply by being a reader/customer during one of the passes through a story.
Another value of the maestro theory: It can't hurt journalists to know how other departments do their jobs. Photogs and reporters tend to be especially ignorant of the copy editing process; many, I suspect, think their stories just magically appear in the paper the next day.
[ April 23, 2002: Message edited by: jjmoney62 ]

I suppose the maestro concept would be valuable for a newspaper that hires photographers who don't realize their pictures should relate to the accompanying story, copy editors who don't realize the headlines and captions should contain the most important details of the story, and graphics editors similarly unable to comprehend the basics of the job.
Having given Buck "Mr. Maestro" Ryan his due, I must add that I will never forgive him for subjecting me and dozens of others in Louisville to his maestro-concept-centric reworking of the Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth."

The mere thought horrifies me. I'm glad you were there to suffer on my behalf.
