ne·ol·o·gism
Function: noun
Etymology: French néologisme, from ne- + log- + -isme -ism
Date: 1800
1 : a new word, usage, or expression
2 : a meaningless word coined by a psychotic

Every once in awhile, a writer will make up a word and put it in his story. Occasionally it's appropriate but remember: A neologism must serve a useful purpose, and being "clever" is not useful. If the fabricated word's meaning is not immediately evident, it must go.
[ May 03, 2002: Message edited by: blanp ]
