WASHINGTON … A man searching for turtles with his dog found the skeletal remains of missing Bureau of Prisons intern Chandra Levy on Wednesday morning in a wooded area of Rock Creek Park, about two miles from the apartment of Levy's close friend, California Congressman Gary Condit. (Knight Ridder)
***Putting the tape measure between where the body was found and Condit's doorstep might be appropriate if the distance were, say, 100 yards.***
[ May 22, 2002: Message edited by: blanp ]

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the nation was not transfixed or fascinated by the Chandra Levy story. It was of some interest in Washington and in Condit's district, but I doubt seriously that very many people in Chicago cared much about it.

Irrelevant use of distances is a standard feature of reporting about our relatively compact capital city, where any crime story can be jazzed up by a mention that the incident occurred one or two miles from the White House or the Capitol.

WASHINGTON … The remains of federal intern Chandra Levy were found in Washington's Rock Creek Park on Wednesday by a man who was looking for turtles. He found a skull instead.
***Out of respect for the Levy family, we refrain from breaking into uncontrollable laughter.***

Billy Martin, the Washington attorney for the
Levy family, said D.C. police officials have not
discussed with him any evidence they have found.
***In no story I've seen is it explained why the police should discuss evidence with the Levys' lawyer. That's because there is no reason.***

No other reason than to communicate with the victim's family, perhaps via that family's attorney.

Discussing confidential matters of evidence would go far beyond "courtesy." The Levys are no more entitled to such information than you or I.
This sort of thing comes up a lot in crime stories. The general public, the "media" and, often, the police misunderstand our criminal-justice system.

Terrance W. Gainer, working through two scrambled eggs and orange juice, was hunched in a booth inside the venerable Reeves Restaurant and Bakery downtown late Wednesday morning. The No. 2 cop in Washington had no optimism to share about the most chronicled missing person in America, Chandra Ann Levy, telling his booth-mate -- a reporter -- that the hunt was so stalled it would take serendipity's intervention to restart it. (Washington P---)
***The most chronicled missing person in America? Have they found Jimmy Hoffa? Or Judge Crater, for that matter?***

And when did Chandra pick up the "Ann"? Makes her sound like a serial killer.
