AUSTIN — The University of Texas at Austin today announced it is paying $5 million to acquire what amounts to the first rough draft of the Watergate scandal as it unfolded and beyond.
It consists of the reporters’ notebooks and other papers of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein as they investigated and wrote for the Washington Post about the scandal that eventually caused President Nixon’s resignation. ...
Woodward and Bernstein, who are splitting the $5 million, will create a $500,000 endowment to enhance the study of the papers. The acquisition is financed by private donations, Faulkner said. The New York Times reports:<p>He [Woodward] said lawyers for The Post had given the university a letter saying that the reporters and not the paper owned the material that was being bought. Boisfeuillet Jones Jr., publisher of the The Post, said, "There are special historical circumstances here, and The Post signed off on their agreement."
