Perhaps ADKBrown can help me out here, but I seem to recall a time when the Times Union of Albany, N.Y. (circ. 100,000 or so) had four managing editors. Included was one who did a horrific redesign as a highly paid consultant, was offered a job, insisted she be ranked as "at least" a managing editor and was forced out after a year or two of collecting a ridiculously inflated paycheck for cogitating in an office all day.
I dunno how it is in Everett, but the papers for which I have worked all seem to have the philosophy that the more bosses, the merrier. And of course, all those folks are long gone when the real battle begins.
[ July 15, 2003: Message edited by: Bumfketeer ]
