HOUSTON, Feb. 14 — A jury sentenced Dr. Clara Harris to 20 years in prison today for attacking and killing her husband with her car in a hotel parking lot near where they were wed 11 years ago on St. Valentine's Day. (New York Times)
***Another inexplicable example of a not-very-interesting local police story creeping into the national news file, in the week that mankind's most compelling questions about the origin of the universe were answered.****
HOUSTON -- A woman who ran over her husband with her Mercedes after catching him with his mistress was convicted of murder today in a real-life Texas soap opera in which she claimed it was a tragic accident. (AP)
***And, needless to say, it was not a "real-life Texas soap opera," whatever that is.***
[ February 15, 2003: Message edited by: blanp ]

This story had legs only because there was associated video that the TV entertainment shows (some call them "news") could show over and over.

I wonder if the O.J. Simpson case was another "not-very-interesting local police story creeping into the national news file" ....

Also: Lizzie Borden, Sam Sheppard, John Brown, Nat Turner, Bruno Hauptmann, Andrea Yates, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Benedict Arnold, Guy Fawkes, Joan of Arc and Jesus Christ -- all, at least in their origins, local/regional law enforcement issues -- of debatable interest (?)
And just wait until the Phil Spector case becomes the "Crime of The New Century," and a parade of has-been pop-music stars start parading nightly onto "Larry King Live" for a fresh transfusion of 15 minutes ....

No, the Simpson case is the template for how such things are "covered" these days. I see no potential for Clara Harris to rival John Brown.
