Canadian folk, or those more in tune with the study of number than I, Jim Fox has his wonderful little Canadian report. In this report he writes:
Gasoline prices in some Canadian cities could reach $1 a liter ($3.89 a U.S. gallon) this winter. Analysts say this is because of the situation in Iraq, an oil worker strike in Venezuela, low inventories and a bitterly cold winter. Gas prices now average 80 cents a liter ($3.12 a U.S. gallon), with Moncton and Bathurst, New Brunswick, the highest at 89.9 cents a liter ($3.50 a gallon) for regular gasoline.
But the conversions don't seem to work out to me. There are 3.8 liters per gallon. So a gallon, at a looney a liter, should go for 3.80 Canadian ($2.50 U.S.). At 80 cents a liter it should be $3.04 a gallon ($2 U.S.). At 89.9 a liter it should be $3.42 Canadian ($2.25 U.S.).
Is there a tax not accounted for here (I don't know if GST applies to gas or how much it is right now)?
Expedient help appreciated.

I just ran the numbers through a spreadsheet so that I could see all the variables at the same time. You're right, the conversion is incorrect.
The prices per US gallon appear to be listed in Canadian dollars. Based on the current exchange rate of USD$0.656858/CAD from www.xe.com, and using 3.78541 l/gal, at CAD$0.899/L, I get CAD$3.403/gal. I can't explain why there is a difference of CAD$0.10/gal, or why anyone would price US gallons of gasoline in Canadian dollars.
All taxes are included in Canadian gasoline "pump prices." Also, we, like, don't say "petro," eh. Hoser.
[ February 16, 2003: Message edited by: Dyslexic ]

Yeah, I know. I just didn't feel like saying gas or gasoline. Thanks for running the conversions again. I'll have to keep a sharp eye on Jim's math in the future.
[ February 16, 2003: Message edited by: 4Jfan ]
