Sheehan, however, notes that the most of the land would be preserved through conservation easements, which permit logging but prohibit development—and thus can be spinned as an economic benefit to the timber industry.
*Is the past tense "spinned" or "spun"? I'll probably change the word, but I'm curious what people think.*

I'd go with spun.
My greater concern is for the statement that logging would be allowed but development prohibited.
Logging is an industrial use of the resources and that is a form of development even if nothing is "built" as the word implies.
[ March 25, 2003: Message edited by: canuck ]

That's a good point, but we're making a distinction between logging and the construction of permanent homes and roads.

You may make that distinction. Most wildlife will not. Who is being spun?

Wildlife do quite well on their timberland. Certain species may do better on timberland than in the public Forest Preserve, where no logging is permitted.

That's why hunting clubs lease the timberlands. It's the "edge effect," and it's why deer also thrive in suburbs.
