"Fog of war" has popped up more times than I can count. Of course it is a cliché. You can tell not only because it's used so often, but also because it's usually used incorrectly.<p>Clausewitz coined the term to describe conditions that made it difficult or impossible to obtain reliable information in war. Combatants, he wrote, are ``in a kind of twilight, which, like fog or moonlight, often tends to make things seem grotesque and larger than they really are.''

Thanks for the link. So he's the guy who said war is "merely the continuation of policy by other means." I've heard that line several times in recent weeks. It's also interesting that he regards the defensive position as the strongest. I wonder if that still applies in an era of cruise missiles and smart (or at least not totally dumb) bombs.
