FROM AP: But overall the renewed emphasis on anthems suits the material and makes for the most vivid and passionate U2 album since 1990’s masterful “Achtung Baby.”
Anybody else cringe when they see (or hear it on TV news every night) that use of masterful?

Not to mention that "Achtung Baby" came out in 1991.

Rock critics (and other entertainment critics as well) often engage in hyperbole. It's why I never buy a CD based on a review. (Full disclosure: I wrote concert reviews for the Buffalo News for several years. I wasn't very good at it.)

In the context of a review, would "masterpiece" have been better than "masterful"?
It might still be exaggeration (although "Achtung" is considered one of the band's two best albums).

I thought Walrus meant that the writer used "masterful" when "masterly" was intended. No need for either, of course.

Yeah, I meant that I object to calling a record (and good catch about '91) "domineering in nature." Or is it time to just let masterful mean "full of mastery?" Ugh.
