Bringing this back to journalism, here's another bizarre story from the New York Times, hysterically overwritten by Bill Carter, who seems to be roughing out a draft of another quasifictional page-turner about the TV industry. <p>The headline and key graf of the story insist this was an ABRUPT move. Let's see: Rather has been doing the job 24 years, the decision essentially was made five months ago, it was confirmed 10 days ago, and he'll be stepping down four months from now. Head-spinning.

Other papers, though, lack even the thought of Carter. The business that so desperately yearns for relevance and "younger readers" had one front page ater another Wednesday full of news about a 73-year-old guy whom no one, relatively speaking, watches anymore.
